God knows why I'm getting dragged into this but once again googlywo your way off the mark. I think it could be worse. There are way too many fanatics in the world today. The third world war would more and likely be nuclear and biological. That would hurt the environment. The result would literally drive the species under ground.

it would drasticly slow down the over population for many years after, but make the others that you mention much worse check out the current status of the nuke tests on bikini island in the pacific circa 1946-1959. read all of the diatribe and reports on this since, it will open your eyes
If that ends wars of aggression and crushes aggressors, then it would be a step in the direction of solving the environmental crisis. So if there is a World War, and Russia, China, or other peaceful countries are involved, I wish them good luck, please God.
If by "clear the air" you mean irradiate the atmosphere and by "Sort population problems" you mean wipe out a nice chunk of life on earth, than yeah.... maybe.
