lisaWhat are environmental issues related to water transport and also other problems?Shipping, or water transportation is the most energy efficient ways to travel or ship items. Air travel of course, is the least energy efficient.
While it took far too long to accomplish, Maritime laws and treaties now exist between countries that prevent ships from discharging ballast water carried from one country to another, and from the open sea to a coastal Port. Now all US Ports have "dumping stations" where an incoming ship must discharge it's ballast water. This water is then treated to prevent the transfer and infestation of unwanted sea life (zebra mussels, etc.) as well as germs %26amp; disease into US waters, and vice versa.
The main issues are referred to as biodiversity. This of course includes the number of species of plants, animals, and microorganisms, living in the different ecosystems on the planet.
At issue on one hand is preserving species and their habitats that are important, and erradication all the harmful ones. Here, you find the fishing idustry on one hand, and the conservationist on the other. Then of course, there remains the world wide pests such as the zebra mussel.
Coral Reefs - are neglected in some areas, and protected in others. Yet, they more than any other are the richest and most useful to the undersea environment. However, all around the world, much of the world鈥檚 coral reefs face threats from human and activities as well as natural.
Then of course there is air pollutants and crude oil. What are environmental issues related to water transport and also other problems? In the Florida Keys it the dumping of oil ,Garbage from Freighters and cruise ships.waiting for the oil from the Gulf spill to get here. Also Human %26amp; Drug smuggling. What are environmental issues related to water transport and also other problems?ballast water transports organisms to non-native areas, with disastrous results (zebra mussels in Great Lakes)
locks and dams disrupt wetlands and other environments
engine exhaust
