Urban sprawl does contribute to environmental problems but it isn't the only one. Clearing forests for agriculture, strip mining, dredging, soil %26amp; pollution erosion, and poor usage of the given land also contribute. People need to utilize the land to it's full capacity before moving on (such as using every last inch of land). We use far less resources in a densely housed neighborhood. We are selling off farm land and moving our agriculture to foreign nations with increased food miles and destruction of rain forest. Suburbs increase the need for a vehicle to accomplish most tasks. We are also increasing the size of our houses and yards which increases our energy and water usage. It makes a lot of problems worse:

1. By living so far from work and other places people can't walk or bicycle. They're dependent on motorized vehicles for transportation.

2. By being spaced so far out, mass transit is uneconomical.

3. Like the other guy said, suburbs take up a lot of land that could have been farm or forest.

4. By being space out, all infrastructure has to be built out farther (water pipes, sewer pipes, powerlines, telephone wire...).
