What are a couple of major environmental problems in Canada's history?
Preferably something that affected the history or Canada's economy, citizens, or something along that line.
So, pretty much the most major problem Canada's Environment has ever faced...
thanks so much ! 鈾?/div> Canadian Environmental Problems?that would be the tar sands in alberta.
they are extracting oil from a substance called bitomen that is not pure oil, rather it is oil mixed with sand and other things that takes a lot to extract it.
for every barrel of oil that is produced at the tar sands it takes 3 barrels of fresh water to extract it. this water is taken directly from a nearby river and becomes so dirty in the process that it cannot be re used. a lot of waste and pollution is also ending up in this river which is having enormous effects on the quality of water and the wildlife that rely on it.
because the project is run by a third party not the canadian government, the company has no interest in protecting the environment because as soon as they've extracted all the oil and made their money they can just pack up and go and leave us canadians with all the environmental impacts.
sadly there has been another large bitomen deposit found in northern saskatchewan recently and it appears as if they will be doing the same there to extract it.
not only is this the worst environmental problem in Canada right now, but many environmentalists argue that it is the worst in the world right now and is giving Canada a very bad name.Canadian Environmental Problems? In general the smelting industry is the biggest environmental problem in Canada.
The single largest environmental problem Canada has ever had is the Sudbury nickel smelting plants. The emissions from these plants destroyed plants and animals within a 50km radius of the plant. In fact the worlds largest smokestack was built in Sudbury to emit this pollution. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inco_Supers鈥?/a>
Another major problem is the Sydney tar ponds, which are ponds now filled with toxic waste from a steel smelter. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Tar_鈥?/a>
You can look up each pollutant and which industries and households emit it using the following government site: http://www.ec.gc.ca/pdb/websol/emissions鈥?/a>Canadian Environmental Problems?canada has an environment? wow.
