What environmental problems are linked to the extraction, transport and use of crude oil?

One word `pollution'. Extracting oil from the earth is a dirty business and there are spills, blow-outs and spillages all of which cause some environmental damage. Transportation of oil creates a further risk of spillage, plus the added problem of disposing of waste from the tankers when they are cleaned out, whether that be on sea or land. The refining process for oil can cause further pollution because of the high risk of further spills, explosion and disposal of oil contaminated solids that cannot be used. Finally, use of refined oil spirits adds to greenhouse gasses
